SBD Studio Wins National Design Award for L’Arc Maison Project

SBD Studio is thrilled to announce that we have won first place in the alterations and additions category for projects over $1M at the BDAA National Design Awards! This prestigious award recognises our work on the L’Arc Maison project, a stunning home located in Gymea Bay, Sutherland Shire.

This project was particularly challenging due to the steeply sloped site whilst also catering to our clients needs of making the home feel like it didn’t have lots of stairs. However, our team worked closely with the clients to create a design that exceeded their expectations.

Project Overview

L’Arc Maison is a testament to meticulous design and planning. Our vision was to create a home that seamlessly blends with the natural environment while serving as a picturesque vantage point overlooking the Royal National Park.

To achieve this, we incorporated several innovative design features:

Views on every level: The house comprises four primary levels, with each floor plan being carefully arranged to capitalise on the views
Preservation of the original sandstone facade: We repointed the mortar and cleaned the sandstone blocks to maintain the home’s heritage-like feel.
Centrally located open-form staircase: This acts as a lightwell to the core of the home, funnelling natural light to the lower levels.
Sustainability through the use of high-quality materials and low maintenance materials: Sandstone, off-form concrete, and light oak create a sense of flow and cohesion throughout the space.
